O preparo para lidar com a Morte na Formação do Profissional de Medicina

Abstract

Resumo: Propõe-se uma reflexão sobre o preparo do profissional de Medicina para lidar com a morte. Destaca-se que é através de um mecanismo de negação que esse profissional se defende da angústia produzida pelo falecimento de um paciente. Tal procedimento acarretaria a diminuição gradativa da comunicação com os doentes considerados sem perspectivas de recuperação. Analisa-se como esse comportamento estão relacionados a processos de idealização da figura do médico tanto por parte do paciente como do familiar. Também se alerta sobre a relação que essas dificuldades do relacionamento médico-paciente têm com o currículo e com a estrutura dos cursos de Medicina, assinalando-se possíveis estratégias para fugir do impasse de lidar com a realidade da morte sem os instrumentos adequados.Abstract: This article proposes a reflection on the preparation of physicians to deal with death. The authors begin by highlighting that physicians use a denial mechanism to defend themselves from the anguish produced by a patient´s impending death. The result of this attitude is a gradual decrease in communication with patients who are considered beyond recovery. The authors proceed to analyze hoe such behaviors are related to the formation of an idealized view of the physician figure by both patients and their family members. Finally, the authors call attention to the relationship between these difficulties in the physician-patient relationship and both the teaching curriculum and the structure of medical courses, in addition to identifying possible strategies for avoiding this impasse in dealing with death.
