Abstract
Nineteen papers, presented at a conference held at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, in November and December 1986, explore applications of mathematical ecology, focusing on resource management, epidemiology, ecotoxicology, and demography and population biology. Papers discuss ecology in theory and application; bioeconomic modeling and resource management; common property and the conservation of natural resources; information and area-wide control in agricultural ecology; three basic epidemiological models; the population biology of parasitic helminths in animal populations; simple versus complex epidemiological models; periodicity in epidemiological models; case studies of rubella, influenza, and AIDS; models in ecotoxicology; deterministic and statistical models of chemical fate in aquatic systems; the effects of toxicants on aquatic populations; mathematical models in plant biology; stable population theory and applications; state structure models applied in evolutionary ecology; and applications of structured models in population dynamics.
