Abstract
The results of the PISA survey of Indonesian students in mathematics are still relatively low. Indonesian students are not familiar with realistic problems that lead to mathematical literacy, one of them on the covariational problem. The Indonesian government applies the AKM (Minimum Competency Assessment) test, one of which is to test students' mathematical literacy skills. Universities has the responsible to prepare mathematics teachers who are able to improve mathematical literacy skills. The aim of this research is to find out student errors in solving covariational problem. The research was conducted on 41 Mathematics Education students of Universitas Lambung Mangkurat. This research approach uses a qualitative approach. The data collected by tests. Data analysis techniques in this study included data collection, data condensation, data presentation, and conclusions. The Identification of student difficulties is traced based on the Newman error analysis, namely: (1) reading, (2) comprehension, (3) transformation, (4) process skill, and (5) encoding. The results showed that students experienced errors in (1) Reading (19,5%), (2) Comprehension (26,8%), (3) Transformation (65,9%), (4) Process Skills (87,8%), and (5) Determining the final answer as the encoding (87,8%). It means that the student must be accustomed to solving covariational problems in order to have good estimation skills or other relevant abilities.
