Altruism, Grief, and Identity

Abstract

The divide between oneself and others has made altruismseem irrational to some thinkers, as Sidgwick points out. Iuse characterizations of grief, especially by St.Augustine, to question the divide, and use acomposition-as-identity metaphysics of parts and wholes tomake literal sense of those characterizations.
