Abstract

DR GRIME replies: There is a clear difference of opinion between Newman and myself with regard to the role of root competition in natural vegetation. It would be a mistake to pursue the discussion, however, without first defining competition and placing the phenomenon in a wider but relevant context. © 1973 Nature Publishing Group.
