Abstract

This paper describes the shipping and fish catching knowledge system which has been applied until now by the fishermen community in the Village of Rangas, Majene Regency. This research is descriptive qualitative. The information presented in this paper is captured from interviews, observation, and literature studies. The results show that the fishermen in carrying out activities at the sea were guided by the sailing knowledge system that they had, such as knowledge of the waves, the corals, the constellations, the clouds, the moon calculations, and the occult. In terms of fish caught, they have a variety of local knowledge systems, such as knowledge about driving a boat, procedures for lowering the fishing gear from the boat, the wind direction, the location of fish, and other problems that may be experienced during fishing and their solution. This knowledge is a picture of the fishermen community tradition continuity in the Village of Rangas.
