Abstract

The Diffusion-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DWI) technique is based on the in vivo detection of the movement of water molecules, which may be restricted in certain pathological conditions such as ischemia and tumors. Even though it has long been used in early diagnosis of cerebral infarction, only recently has expanded its use to pathologies in the abdomen and pelvis. This article reviews the fundamentals of the technique, protocols used and its main applications in abdominal and pelvic lesions, specifically in neoplasm detection and characterization.
