A family of analytical equilibria for field-reversed configurations has been constructed. Unlike the familiar Hill's vortex, these equilibria are consistent, in an approximate sense, with the external magnetic field produced by a straight magnetic coil. These equilibria span the range from "elliptical" to "racetrack"-like separatrix shape. The properties of the new equilibria are described along with the stability consequences. © 1990 American Institute of Physics.
