Abstract

Cyclic voltammogram showed the redox current in the 18-crown-6 ether (18C6) contained ionic liquids and Mg deposits were observed, while only insulating behavior appeared without crown ethers. Raman spectra revealed that Mg2+-ion formed 1:1 complex with 18C6. The anti-oxidation capability of the Mg2+:18C6 = 1:1 solution was improved to 3.5 V (vs.Mg2+/Mg). Moreover, the solution was thermally stable up to 350°C. The results indicated that the complex with 18C6 played as "solvating ionic liquid" in the solution. The specific properties of crown ethers were also discussed from the comparison with glyme contained solutions.
