Abstract

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO, 2008) have recognized a need for scientific advice on any food safety implications that may arise from the use of nanotechnologies in the food and agriculturesectors through its horizon-scanning activities. With the advent of nanotechnology, the prospects for using medical imaging, disease diagnoses, drug delivery, cancer treatment, gene therapy, and other areas have progressed rapidly. The worldwide market for products produced using nanotechnology is estimated to reach US$1 trillion by 2015 (Roco, 2005).
