One of a series of volumes which seek to determine the development effectiveness of the regional banks by examining their impact on growth, poverty, the environment, and social indicators of development. Concentrating on the period from 1970 to the early 1990s, the book tries to point out the individuality of the IDB by analysing the evolution of its lending program and its division of labour with the World Bank. Chapters are presented in two parts: historical setting and record of performance; and development agenda. The former looks at the evolution of the lending program and borrowing country experience; the latter examines topics such as loan performance and institutional governance, and comparative advantage and regional leadership, resource mobilization, and future development challenges. -M.Amos
