Abstract

This exploratory pilot study investigated the effects of chronic ∆-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) on cerebral glucose metabolism in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Compared with nonusers, THC users had hyperme-tabolism of 3 regions (p < 0.039, d >1.17) in left temporal areas, while CBD users had hypometabolism of 5 regions (p < 0.032, d > 1.31) in left temporal areas. This study highlights the need to discriminate between THC and CBD in future cannabis studies. Novelty • Chronic THC and CBD use had disparate effects on cerebral glucose metabolism in PwMS.
