Abstract
Carry-over phenomena occur both in manual and mechanised procedures and are often neglected in practice. They are observed even with the latest clinical chemistry analysers. This paper makes recommendations concerning the terminology of carry-over and its classification. The conceptual aspects of specimen-dependent and specimen-independent carry-over are outlined, and both the experimental determination and calculation of carry-over effects are described in detail. © 1991 IUPAC
