Abstract

Allyl alc. was continuously hydroformylated by H2CO in an arom. hydrocarbon in the presence of Rh complex and a trisubstituted phosphine to give hydroxybutyl aldehydes, which were sepd. from the reaction mixt. by aq. extn. Thus, allyl alc. was hydroformylated in the presence of the RhH(CO)(PPh3)3, PPh3, and Ph2P(CH2)4PPh2 to give 98% alc. conversion and 79.1% selectivity for 4-hydroxybutyraldehyde. Also produced were 3-hydroxy-2-methylpropionaldehyde, 1-propanol, and propionaldehyde. [on SciFinder(R)]
