Abstract

Cystitis describes a clinical syndrome of dysuria, frequency, urgency, occasional suprapubic pain, usually associated with urinary tract infection (UTI), an infl ammatory response of the urothelium to bacterial invasion with bacteriuria, and pyuria. UTI affects men and women of all ages. The prevalence in young women is 30 times higher than in men. Almost half of all women experience a UTI during their lifetime [ 3 ]. However, with increasing age, the ratio of women to men with bacteriuria progressively decreases.
