Spatio-temporal distribution of precipitation in the Jubones river basin, Ecuador: 1975-2013

Abstract

Resumen La compresión del ciclo hidrológico de la cuenca del río Jubones (CRJ) aún es compleja, surgiendo la necesidad de caracterizar la distribución espacio-temporal de la precipitación de la cuenca, debido a la accidentada topografía y la influencia del Océano Pacífico (OP) sobre el clima y la precipitación. La metodología adoptada para evaluar la precipitación para la serie 1975-2013 se realizaron dos análisis. Primero, para la variabilidad espacial se determinó la relación elevación-precipitación, la distribución espacial y la identificación de regímenes pluviométricos. El segundo, para la variabilidad temporal incluyó un análisis de estacionalidad y estacionaridad. Se obtuvo como resultado, que, debido a la compleja orografía, no fue posible definir una relación única entre la precipitación media anual y la elevación (R 2 = 0,19). Las precipitaciones abundantes se registraron por debajo de los 500 m.s.n.m. y disminuye en la parte céntrica de la zona alta de la cuenca. La variabilidad espacial es altamente heterogénea, pero se encuentra muy bien representada por dos vectores regionales (parte baja y región andina), el régimen pluviométrico es unimodal con una marcada estacionalidad en el VR1 y una baja estacionalidad para el VR2, la CRJ presenta un incremento del 0,21% de la precipitación, pero la tendencia es no significativa. Abstract The compression of the hydrological cycle of the Jubones river basin (JRB) is still complex, arising the need to characterize the spatio-temporal distribution of basin precipitation, due to the rugged topography and influence of the Pacific Ocean (PO) on climate and precipitation. The methodology which adopted to evaluate precipitation for the 1975-2013 series was performed two analyzes. The first one, for the spatial variability, the elevation-precipitation ratio, the spatial distribution and the identification of rainfall regime were determined. The second, for the temporal variability included an analysis of seasonality and stationarity. As a result, due to the complex orography, it was not possible to define a unique relationship between mean annual precipitation and elevation (R 2 = 0.19). Abundant rainfall was recorded below 500 m.a.s.l. and decreases in the central part of the upper basin. The spatial variability is highly heterogeneous, but it is well represented by two regional vectors (low and Andean region), the rainfall regime is unimodal with a marked seasonality in the VR1 and a low seasonality for the VR2, the CRJ presents an increase of 0.21% of precipitation, but the trend is not significant.
