Abstract
Neuropsychological Practice With Veterans is the first volume to provide a comprehensive overview of neuropsychological assessment, treatment, training, and trends for clinicians working with military veterans. It is the culmination of more than 50 years of evolving knowledge regarding the neuropsychological treatment of military veterans, and addresses the needs of veterans of current operations in the Middle East, prior wars, and noncombat veterans who are suffering from a variety of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral disorders. The treatment of veterans suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBl), considered the signature injury of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, is a particular focus of this book, in addition to TBI, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depression often afflict these veterans and contribute to neurological symptoms. This text also addresses the assessment and treatment of aging veterans of previous military conflicts and of combat and noncombat veterans with neurological and emotional problems related to aging, substance abuse, HIV and hepatitis, psychiatric disorders, and other issues. Topics such as training and supervision, ethical concerns, and program development for neuropsychology in the Department of Veterans Affairs are also covered. Encompassing the writings of clinicians and researchers experienced in working with military veteran populations, the book is grounded in an understanding of the unique assessment and treatment cultures of veterans, including the specialized service delivery methods and procedures of the VA. Key features include the following: Addresses the growing need for neuropsychological assessment and treatment of returning veterans as well as aging veterans of earlier conflicts and noncombat veterans; Focuses on TBI and PTSD; Describes assessment of symptom validity (malingering), polytrauma management, and training concerns; Written by clinicians and researchers experienced in working with veterans; Edited by a board-certified neuropsychologist who is a leader in the field.
