Abstract
Symbols play dual roles for nonspeaking persons learning language via instruction. They are the medium by which internal representations of the world are expressed and they provide an inference about how individuals perceive their world. This paper reviews and synthesizes the current empirical literature on symbols and suggests future research directions. © 1991, Informa UK Ltd. All rights reserved.
