Experimental Study of the Room Temperature and Relative Humidity in Javanese House in Baluwarti, Surakarta Sunanate Palace

Abstract

Controlling temperature and relative humidity in storage and exhibition areas is crucial for the long-term preservation of cultural heritage buildings. In this research, temperature and relative humidity measurements were conducted in the cultural heritage buildings, namely Javanese houses in Baluwarti, which is located in Surakarta Sunanate Palace. The study aimed to predict undesirable indoor environmental conditions such as excessively high or low relative humidity. Measurements were taken by recording room temperature and humidity three times a day for Pendopo Room in the Javanese House. The accuracy results were categorized as high, medium, and low based on the measurement data. The measured sensor data of temperature and humidity in the rooms were then compared with the climate data for a period of seven days. Both types of data were collected, and these data could make analized using surfer v.25 of the distribution of room temperature and humidity in the Baluwarti Javanese houses. The highest temperature in the Pendopo room is 32.3 °C in the western area of the Pendopo room during the day. In comparison, the highest humidity is 77.9% in the southern region in the morning. The lowest temperature was found at 27.0 °C in the south in the morning. In comparison, the lowest relative humidity is 59.8% in the middle area of the Pendopo room during the day. The results of this study can be used to understand the distribution of room temperature and humidity and to predict room temperature and humidity, thereby giving longer protection to the parts of these historical buildings like the wooden materials and furniture that have become Javanese cultural heritage.
