Abstract
“The death penalty” or “capital punishment” refers to the legally sanctioned sentencing and killing of persons guilty of a crime by a state government. This chapter discusses major concepts related to the death penalty, delineates empirical facts about capital punishment, and notes recent developments and future directions.
