Um Encontro com Robert Cooper: os Primórdios e o Futuro da Abordagem Processual nos Estudos Organizacionais

Abstract

O objetivo deste trabalho é examinar a contribuição teórica dos trabalhos de Robert Cooper aos estudos organizacionais. Cooper foi um dos primeiros autores a elaborar uma abordagem processual para a análise do fenômeno organizacional. Para alcançar este objetivo, o trabalho irá discutir ideias presentes nos principais textos de Cooper. Primeiramente será feita uma análise das ideias deThe open field para depois tratar dos textosOrganization/disorganization e Formal organization as representation; após isso, serão analisados trabalhos de Cooper dedicados a situar o corpo na análise das organizações, bem como os que elaboraram o que Chia (1998a) chamou de ‘lógica do outro’ que permeou todos os seus escritos. Por fim, será discutido o que constitui uma contribuição teórica e qual foi a contribuição teórica dos escritos de Cooper aqui analisados para os estudos organizacionais. Serão tecidas também algumas considerações finais a respeito de como Cooper vem sendo lido no Brasil e como este encontro teórico com o autor pode suscitar novas possibilidades de pesquisas nos estudos organizacionais brasileiros.The objective of this study is to examine the theoretical contribution of Robert Cooper’s work for organization studies. Cooper was one of the first authors to propose and develop a processual approach to the analysis of the organizational phenomenon. To accomplish this, the paper will discuss the main ideas present in Cooper’s works. His main works to be analyzed here include: The open field, Organization/disorganization, andFormal organization as representation. We will also analyze Cooper’s works dedicated to situate the body in the analysis of organizations, as well as those which elaborated the idea that Chia (1998a) called the ‘logic of the other’. We will also argue that this idea permeated all his writings. Finally, we will discuss what constitutes a theoretical contribution and what was the theoretical contribution of the writings of Cooper here analyzed for the study of organizations. We will also highlight some final considerations regarding how Cooper has been read in Brazil and how this theoretical encounter with this author may raise new possibilities for research in the Brazilian organization studies.
