Abstract

Many organizations recognize the importance and apply Knowledge Management (KM) to improve performance and obtain competitive advantages. In public organizations, its adoption represents using a management model aimed at improving the provision of their services, including in educational institutions, as they deal with knowledge and this is the reason for existing. However, before implementing KM, organizations must carry out a previous analysis regarding aspects related to the dynamics of knowledge internally. In this sense, the present study aimed to diagnose the level of maturity in KM of the distance education system (DE) of a federal educational institution in the southern region of Rio de Janeiro. The research was classified as qualitative and quantitative, exploratory-descriptive and applied, through a case study. Data collection was carried out by a questionnaire, adapted from the KM assessment instrument model proposed by Batista (2012) for the context of distance education, applied to the general, courses and tutoring coordinators of the system, to assess the level of maturity in GC. The results obtained has shown that the level of maturity in KM of the researched universe is at initiation, which indicates that, based on the classification of the model used, the need to manage knowledge and the importance of KM for DE and for the institution is recognized, as well as its benefits, from the application of practices and techniques that allow the adequate management of knowledge applicable to the modality in that universe.
