Abstract

In this article a review is given about the rise and fall of amphetamine and its derivatives as a therapeutic agent. After a joyful welcome there is scarcely a place for amphetamines in therapy nowadays. A very important factor is that better substances have been found for various indications. On the other hand a better insight has been obtained in the dangers attached to the use of this group of substances. Amphetamines are still important as a 'dope': although the use of amphetamine does not improve the sport results, reasons can be given for why they are still used. A short review is given about the use of amphetamines as 'drug' and the dangers connected with this use.
