Abstract

Discusses in detail the causes and effects of seiches in closed or semi-closed water bodies, and in coastal areas. Surges, as related phenomena, and how these differ from seiches are discussed. Internal seiches and internal waves are considered, and research and progress in understanding of how tidal currents generate internal solitons and how these might transfer energy to coastal seiches is discussed. Current understanding of the effects of seiches on human activities are outlined. -J.M.McLaughlin
