Abstract
Several types of sedimentary basin classifications have been proposed aU around the world, before and after the onset of the Plate Tectonic Theory, and some of them were applied,~? the Brazilian basins, principal1y Klemme's classiflcation. ln 1983, Exxon geologists Kingston, Dishroon and Williams published their Global,Basin Classiflc.ation System where to each basin á formula wes atributed, reflecting its tectoníc and sedimentary evolutíon. The components of this formula are coded by letters and numbers representing stages of forming tectonícs, modifying tectcnics and also the sedimentary package that fills up the basins. Therefore, this olassífication system, in contrast with previous ones, allows a fast evaluation of the petroleum potencial of sedimentary basins, as well as the characterization of fundamental differences among them. Some of the most representative Brazilian petroleum-bearing basins are discussed in details in this paper uslng the Kingston's classification system. AIso a general picture of the ln situ hydrocarbons volumes, discovered in the Brazilian basíns, is displayed according to this classiflcation. These data are compared with the published ones by Kingston and cc-workers based upon 800 basina of the world.
