Abstract

This study focuses on the VTMIS implementation and utilisation at the ports of Santos and Barcelona. It aims at analysing: 1) the system’s implementation context; 2) the adopted model, as well as its objectives and functionalities; 3) the benefits brought by the system, as well as its impacts on mooring operations and maritime pilotage service. In order to do so, a qualitative and exploratory approach was followed, based on in-depth interviews and on-site visits. As results, a much more mature and integrated VTMIS was identified in Barcelona. Due to the lack of integration and coordination perceived in the VTMIS project at the port of Santos, a set of recommendations for the proper VTMIS implementation in Brazil was developed. These recommendations may also be useful to ports of another regions involved with VTMIS implementation processes.
