Abstract

This article focuses on service learning as a form of community engagement and the inculcation of social responsibility (SR) in social work students. By utilising the Department of Social Work and Social Development of the University of Fort Hare as a case study, the article shows that it should not be assumed that a social work student is automatically socially responsible. An explicit and conscious effort should be made to inculcate SR in social work students. Recommendation is made for a theoretical framework that may assist towards educating social work students to become more socially responsible.
