Abstract
1. A new sampler-incubator, ISIS, is described which, by feeding a solution of carbon-14-carbonate into the sample at the moment of sampling, permits a true in situ determination of primary production in a water body. 2. Several experiments, which exemplify the ISIS technique, are described in detail. 3. The advantages and disadvantages of the new and current standard techniques for measuring primary production are discussed. © 1973 Biologischen Anstalt Helgoland.
