Pharmacological Treatment In Smoking Cessation: Bupropion

Abstract

Smoking is the most important cause of preventable morbidity and early mortality alone. Smoking cessation treatments have an important place in national health programs. Smoking behavior continues with the reason for the addiction, which is thought to be caused by nicotine. The increased prevalence of depression among smokers and the difficulty in smoking cessation with depressed cigarette addicts led to the investigation for antide-pressants in quitting treatments. Bupropion is a safe and well tolerated antidepressant with a reducing effect on smoking cessation. The effect on smoking cessation is not fully known. The most common side effects are insomnia, dry mouth, nausea and headache. As with antidepressants, there are risks of convulsions and allergic reactions at low rates. Bupropion therapy is recommended in cases with smoking cessation motivation and absent contraindications.
