Abstract

Aphidicolin, a specific inhibitor of eucaryotic α DNA polymerase, inhibits the growth of halophilic archaebacteria. In Halobacterium halobium, aphidicolin prevents cell division and DNA synthesis. These results suggest that archaebacterial replicases are of the eucaryotic type.
