Abstract

A survey of the daily intake of food was conducted among 220 centenarians in Japan. The results as analyzed on the bases of the amount of nutrient intake, proportional intake for food groups and the number of food items taken are summarized below 1) There was a significant gap between the recommended dietary allowances (trial) and the actual amont of nutrient intake. Neither males nor females reached the recommended levels for iron and vitamin A. This was especially true of iron as its intake was less than 60% of the requirement. As for other vitamins, the requirements for vitamins Bz and C were met by males and those for vitamins B1, B2 and C by females. 2) The amount of intake broken down by food groups was relatively low for any group except seaweed. Intake of meat and fat was noticeably insufficient. 3) Physical conditions greatly affected the nutrient intake among the aged. The subjects who could leave bed and move around to some extent took significantly more protein and various other nutrients than the bedridden subjects did. 4) The centenarians in hospitals or institutions took a greater amounts of all nutrients and food groups except sugar, sweets and eggs than those at home. 5) The average number of food items taken was 16.4•}6.55 per day, which is fairly small compared to 30 items in the recommended dietary intake.
