Integrated design of industrialized building systems: The Technology Center of the Sarah Network - CTRS, Brazil

Abstract

The design process of a building should be a collective activity, with the participation of different specialties. In these processes, an effective coordination is necessary to foster interactivity among design team. In Brazil, the hospital design process developed by architect João Filgueiras Lima at the Technology Center of The Sarah Network of Rehabilitation Hospitals (CTRS) is was important example of integrated design to industrialized buildings, by encompassing all stages of the built process. The CTRS was an innovative experience of construction industrialization in Brazil, and also a major center for research. The present study analyzes the integrated design process at the CTRS, through a case study, based on direct observations, guided visits, survey of data in the CTRS design collection and interviews with architect João Filgueiras Lima, known as  Lelé and professionals of his team. The results show the development of all stages of the building in the CTRS, from the planning to the maintenance, which facilitates the design process and improves the building functioning.
