Studies were made of 1000 newborn infants admitted to a special care nursery. Hypoglycemia (blood glucose level below 20 mg./100 ml.) was frequently found when looked for routinely (17/1000 live births). When infants with and without hypoglycaemia were compared, the incidence of symptoms did not differ significantly between the groups, and the death rates were identical. In those hypoglycaemic infants who died, an acceptable cause of death other than the hypoglycaemia was established, with but one possible exception.
