Medical indications for contact lens wear are summarised. Contact lens types and nomenclature, together with the factors governing lens choice, are discussed. Lens hygiene principles and common faults are described. A strategy for the diagnosis and management of contact lens complications is outlined with emphasis on the acute and common disorders that present to the general practitioner. Advice on how to find a contact lens practitioner is given.
