Convergence of Singapore's Competency-Based Character and Citizenship Education and Primary School Physical Education

Abstract

The 2022 new national curriculum in South Korea focuses on developing competencies required in a future society. In Singapore, competency-based Character and Citizen Education(CCE) was introduced to schools. CCE is implemented beyond the boundaries of each subject and contains Core Values, Social and Emotional Competencies, and Emerging 21st Century Competencies. This study aims to explore how CCE and primary school physical education are converged to strengthen students' competencies. Competency-based CCE enables students to learn the competencies necessary to grow into mature citizens with good character. In doing so, students take on responsible roles in each area for him/herself, family, school, community, country, society and Singapore's future. The Singapore Ministry of Education is deeply involved at the government level to strengthen students with the competencies in CCE, and schools implement it through each subject so that its concrete implementation can be achieved. The results of this study are expected to provide an insightful idea on the establishment and operation of plans for each local government in the Personality Education Promotion Act and the detailed composition and direction of the 2022 new national curriculum for each school.
