Abstract
Summary: Within Floodrisk II project several sub-projects were performed, dealing with new technical solutions and innovative suggestions for a (technical) integrative floodrisk management respectively. The catastrophic flood events of 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2009 highlighted the need for improvements in monitoring dam safety, mobile flood protection and technical solutions for buildings in general. The findings of the paper are dealing with those new challenges by discussing advantages and disadvantages of different protection systems and/or protection concepts. A detailed presentation is given for e.g. geotechnical aspects, the application of mobile flood protection systems, differentiating between public or private purposes. Additional focus is given on life-cycle-management (LCM) of torrent control structures. However, in a summarized view it has to be mentioned, that before an application and practical use of technical flood protection systems, other issues (e.g. preservation or restoration of floodplains) should be discussed, which are ranked as having higher priority related to sustainable flood risk management. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.
