Abstract
Background This study started with the question of whether the educational discussion and implementation of design according to the trend of the times has been adequately reflected and developed in the curriculum of Korea. The concept and scope of design has been gradually expanded through the industrial revolution, and recently, in the face of the 4th industrial revolution, it is expanding its scope once again through convergence with technology. The purpose of this study is to explore the transformation of Korean curriculum in order to seek changes in the contents and methods of design education at the turning point of the educational paradigm. Methods It was conducted by the literature search method. First, each curriculum was reviewed to find out the image of the times and people. Subsequently, from 1960, 81 textbooks for each of 10 curriculums were synthesized and compared with changes in content and design by detailed area. Next, the design defined in the current 14 textbooks was analyzed to find out the design areas covered in the current curriculum. Results Through this, finally arranged basic data to explore the changes in the design curriculum in Korea, and derived from it that the new role of design in the future society that will come after the initial practical design education is not reflected in a developmental way. Conclusions Accordingly, this study points out that design education for learners who will live in the future society is stagnating, and proposes a follow-up study on the development plan of design education.
