Anxiety symptoms are highly prevalent in clinical practice although not necessarily associated to psychiatric disorders. The diagnosis of anxiety disorders is based on the intensity and duration of symptoms as well as on their connection with external factors. Current diagnostic criteria are based in several independent but closely related disorders and, thus, higher comorbidity rates among them are more the rule than exception. This article reviews the clinical picture and general treatment strategies for panic disorder, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, specific phobias, posttraumatic distress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. © Copyright Moreira Jr. Editora.
