Abstract

Intrigued by the finding that blood platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity is low in some schizophrenic patients, the authors have been involved in a continuous effort to determine the potential significance of this low enzyme activity to schizophrenia. In this review, they examine this effort and assess the possible influence on their findings of the large number of artifacts that have plagued the investigation of biological factors related to psychiatric disorders.
