Effects of Eight Weeks of Core Stability Training on Serum level of Progranulin and Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha in Women with Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background and objective: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is acommon debilitating disease that occurs due to the demyelinating inflammatory process in the central nervous system with various clinical symptoms. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of core stability training on serum levels ofprogranulin and tumor necrosis factor alpha in women with multiple sclerosis. Methods: The statistical sample of the study consisted of 24 women with MS (25 to 40 years old) in Bojnourd with Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) of from 2 and 5. Patients were purposefully and randomly divided into two groups, namely central stability training (n= 12) and control group (n = 12). The training group performed three 30 to 40-minute sessions per week of central stability training for 8 weeks. A blood test was performed by the ELISA method to assess serum levels of progranulin and tumor necrosis factor alpha. We analyzed data using the covariance test at a significant level (P<0.05). Results: According to the results, eight weeks of core stability training was associated with a significant increase on serum level of progranulin (P= 0.037) and significant decrease on the level of tumor necrosis factor alpha (P=0.000) in women with MS. Conclusion: Eight weeks of core stability training could change serum levels of progranulin and tumor necrosis factor alpha and improve the condition of women with MS. with MS. Therefore, the training could be used as a complementary treatment along with medication for MS patients. Keywords: Progranulins; Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α); Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
