Systematic bibliographic review of the main dimensions of gender equality from a coeducational perspective

Abstract

Introduction. Gender equality is a fundamental principle of social justice that asserts that all individuals, regardless of their gender, should have equal rights, opportunities, and access to resources and power. Conducting research on this phenomenon requires a deep understanding of its various dimensions. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic literature review on the main aspects included in the broad concept of gender equality, in order to determine categories and indicators for analysis in future research and analyses. Methodology. Following the PRISMA methodology, a systematic literature review was conducted on the main dimensions of gender equality. A total of 58 articles were selected from 511 identified in major national and international databases. Results. The categorization resulted in eight dimensions: labor and/or professional, shared responsibility and family reconciliation, education, health and emotions, culture and society, economy, gender-based violence, and freedom and autonomy, along with an open dimension “other aspects”. Discussion and Conclusions. The review sheds light on the most prevalent dimensions and factors in the conception of “gender equality”, as an essential element for the proper development of subsequent research and intervention.
