Abstract
From press release to Facebook post: Remediation and translation in Flemish science news headlines In the course of travelling from the lab to Flemish journalists, and eventually to the public, scientific information undergoes a complex series of transformations, some of which may significantly alter the accuracy of the message. This study aims to map these transformations using a typology that draws on journalism studies and translation studies and is based on a corpus study of science news headlines. Specifically, we combine the notions of remediation and translation to gain a better understanding of the broad spectrum of changes that science news undergoes as it passes through an increasingly complex communications chain. We propose five key categories of transformations: simplifications, adding or removing information, changes to the nuance, cultural adaptations and the adding or removing of experts and politicians. This paves the way for further research on the impact of such transformations.
