Abstract

Priapism is a complication rarely seen in childhood leukemia. Previously reported cases have been associated with marked leukocytosis, with pathogenesis being ascribed to sludging effect of leukemic cells within the corpora cavernosa of the penis. We report here the case of a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who developed priapism in the absence of leukocytosis. It is suggested that this complication occurred as a result of disturbance of the central or peripheral nervous system and that intrathecal administration of methotrexate may constitute an effective form of treatment.
