Water education in the schools

Abstract

The American Water Works Association education program is outlined. This program has been developed to teach young children about the water industry. It consists of the “Story of Water Supply”, and three teacher's guides that cover the elementary to junior high grades. Each guide is designed to stand alone. They contain a complete sequence of lessons with teacher plans, reproducible student pages, additional ideas for teachers and a glossary. The primary and intermediate levels include lessons in science, language arts, social studies, art and math. At the advanced level, higher thinking skills are used in a problem solving exercise and can fit easily into the science or social studies curriculum. It is the goal of the AWWA program to educate students about the development and maintenance of water sources, water quality, water distribution systems, and conservation; and to provide students with the knowledge of the complexities of the water industry. The expected outcome will be an informed consumer who will appreciate clean water and use it wisely. © 1984 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
