Abstract

Introduction: Salmonella enterica subesp. enterica ser. Give is found in ruminants, pigs, poultry, aquatic environments and rarely in humans; in Colombia, this serotype was ranked 11th in the laboratory surveillance of acute diarrheal disease between the years 2000 and 2013. Q Objective: Characterize phenotypic and genotypic isolates of Salmonella related to an outbreak of Foodborne Illness in the region of Vichada, epidemiological week five, 2015. Materials and Methods: Following the test method of the “Instituto Nacional de Salud”, Salmonella spp. was sought in 37 fecal samples. The sample of canned sardines was processed according to ISO6579:2002 Cor.1:2004 standard. The isolations were confirmed by serology and/or real time PCR, antimicrobial susceptibility tests and gel electrophoresis pulse fields with XbaI and BlnI enzymes. Results: All isolated samples of human origin (11) and isolation of food (1) were identified as S. Give; food isolation provided tetracycline resistance. PFGE analysis-XbaI with 96,3% similarity in pattern COIN15JEXX01.0005 grouped ten isolated samples of human origin and, in the COIN15JEXX01.0006 the remaining isolated samples. All isolated samples were confirmed with BlnI enzyme, four of them were matched with a 95,65% of similarity in the pattern COIN15JEXA26.002 (three human and food isolates). Conclusion: This study confirmed that canned sardines were related to the transmission of S. Give in the outbreak. This is the third outbreak caused by this serotype in Colombia.
