Abstract
Design rules are given for both allowable- stress design (elastic design) and maximum- strength design (plastic design). Plastic design is recommended as the more rational approach to designing steel beams with holes. The scope of the rules is shown. The rules are restricted to nonreinforced holes, and to holes whose center line coincides with the beam axis.
