Abstract
The strawberry cultivar Mohawk, developed from a cross between MDUS-4587$\$nand Earliglow, has attractive, flavourful, early ripening fruit produced$\$non a vigorous plant with resistance to red scele root rot (Phytophthora$\$nfragariae). Mohawk ripens earlier and was improved for important$\$nfruit and plant characteristics, when compared to the standard early$\$nripening cultivars Veestar and Earliglow. In trials between 1983$\$nand 1994, yield of Mohawk was between 14 and 24 t/ha at Beltsville$\$nand between 9 and 14 t/ha in Ontario, Canada. This was less than$\$nfor the other cultivars tested including Veestar and Earliglow, except$\$nin 1988 and 1992 when it produced a larger yield than Lateglow at$\$nBeltsville and Vineland, Ontario, respectively. In 1994 it produced$\$nthe greatest yield of the cultivars tested at Beltsville (17 t/ha).$\$nIn 1988, the fruit of Mohawk was inferior for appearance and symmetry.$\$nIn 1994, which was warmer and drier than 1988, Mohawk fruit was similar$\$nto that of Earliglow, its high quality parent, for all characters$\$nexcept symmetry.
