Integrating local potential in science learning: A contextual approach to the independent curriculum in Ciamis, West Java

Abstract

Ciamis, located in West Java, is rich in biodiversity, cultural heritage, and natural resources, offering an opportunity for contextual science education aligned with the Independent Curriculum. This study explores the integration of local potential into junior high school science learning, addressing the challenges of curriculum implementation and educators’ preparedness. Using a qualitative exploratory approach, document analysis, field observation, and interviews, the research identifies 29 local resources categorised into cultural heritage sites, natural resources, traditional foods, beverages, and local crafts. The findings reveal that these resources align with curriculum objectives, offering multiple entry points for enhancing students’ understanding of science through real-world contexts. The study proposes pedagogical strategies like place-based learning and product-centred inquiry to integrate these resources effectively. The implications suggest that contextualising learning through local potential can enhance student engagement, support cultural preservation efforts, and address modern educational challenges despite barriers such as limited resources and knowledge gaps among educators.
