Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze in depth the meaning of symbolic communication manifested throughout the entire series of traditional wedding ceremonies in the Sasak culture of Lombok. In the context of intercultural communication, the wedding procession serves as a medium for transmitting philosophical and moral values that reflect the social identity and spiritual devotion of the Sasak people. This study not only identifies symbols but also interprets how these symbols signify roles, responsibilities, and the order of household life. The research method used is qualitative with an interpretive ethnographic approach. Ethnography was chosen because it allows researchers to explore meaning from an emic perspective (the research subject's point of view), which is crucial for understanding traditional rituals. Primary data came from religious leaders, traditional leaders, and local community members who actively participated in the wedding procession. The primary data collection techniques included participant observation of the ceremony, in-depth interviews, and visual and textual documentation to ensure the validity of data triangulation. Comprehensive research results indicate that the meaning of symbolic communication in Sasak wedding ceremonies falls into three main domains: morality, social responsibility, and leadership. These meanings are embedded in various ceremonial paraphernalia, including: olen-olen, meaning thread used to cover the human body for greater modesty. Salin dede signifies the transfer of responsibility from parents to husbands. Sesirah aji signifies that humans cannot escape from rules. Pemegat signifies a bayayun (leader during the selabar ceremony). Kebo turu signifies being the backbone of the family. And Gaman Desa signifies the responsibility of being the head of the family. Overall, these findings conclude that symbolic communication in Sasak weddings functions as a cultural pedagogy that teaches traditional gender roles and integrated Islamic values, making the wedding ceremony not only a celebration but also a confirmation of communal identity and a moral promise passed down through generations.
