Abstract
Interest in citizen education in the context of lifelong learning is central to the study objectives to describe and understand the development of social and civic competence in the educational field. A Delphi study can make a proposal in which the social and civic competence is composed of 89 items organized into five areas: knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and desired behaviors. In parallel, the study of a school in Seville discovers didactic strategies and organizational processes that benefit the development of the various components of this competence. Among the most significant results, we can mention the role of values as pillars supporting the structure of social and civic competence defined around 89 items. With them, the skills to become independent and free in society are also crucial. Regarding the didactic aspects, strategies based on students’ active participation in the learning process (such as dialogue in class), the connection between the theory and the reality of the students, group work, active participation in class, meetings, debate and games are some of the most useful strategies for the development of the social and civic competence. Moreover, the relationship between different members of the educational community defined by a rich communication and cordiality, cooperation and group work, the establishment of regulating tools for peaceful coexistence based on taking decisions in common, as well as engagement with the educational project are some of the main organizational and relational processes.
